A GEM OUT OF NO-WHERE!
by memberhu (Wednesday, December 7, 2005)

Late night, I was surfing the net, desperately searching for a song- a great song, a new song and a different song, when suddenly a topic posted on a music forum caught my sight "kickass new paki song". Without a second thought I clicked it but found a very strange and lengthy song title which included an english word, an urdu word and 3 unknown people instead of 1 band name. Not impressed at all by the title but still thirsty for something pleasing to ears, I clicked on the link and started downloading it. When the downloading ended, a musical freak as I am, I switched off the lights and the noisy fan, took out my extremely expensive headphones and finally clicked the play button. It was 3 28 AM in the night at that time. When the clock struck 3 33, I had been gifted by God, 4 minutes & 50 seconds of pure ecstasy and euphoria- something so unknown yet so brilliant! I had hardly ever received so much pleasure in a pakistani song because I am not a big fan of desi artists and bands. When the clock struck 5 AM, I had spend the whole time with only 1 song in the playlist again & again. The only other time I had done that was when I first heard addat, when I first heard manwa re and when I first heard ankhon kay saagar. If you surf around the orcut and the music forums of all pakistani bands, the most talked about song right now which has exploded on the internet is a track named "Yaadein Nostalgia- Aadil Farook featuring Salman Yasin & Mahira Junaid". As a serious music listener, there are 6 criterias which depict a song's status: Originality, Songwriting/Composition/Melody, Vocals, Lyrics, Musical Arrangement/Structure & Production. Believe me, there have been hardly any songs in Pak industry that standout on all 6 criterias with very few being original or different, very few being well produced and hardly a song with english lyrics has good poetry in it. For example Addat the biggest hit in the last 5 years has everything good in it BUT except the lyrics which are not just ordinary but infact pathetic. The reason why I am reviewing this song is that it has all the ingredients in it. Firstly the song is totally different, unique and refreshing unlike anything heard from pak industry. Secondly melody although mellow is still catchy & very touching. It stands 150% true to Nostalgia. Thirdly where female vocals are just good, the male vocals are simply outstanding. Mahira is unknown but Salman Yasin, who used to sing for perhaps the 1st ever underground rock band in pakistan "mind riot" and then received classical training, is known to non-commercial circles for his exceptional singing abilities, be it ghazals, be it pink floyd or even metal. Fourthly where the urdu lyrics are just good, the english ones are coming right from the pen of a true poet: "In your eyes, fumes of passion In your voice, an unheard hysteria In your hair, laces of heaven In your smile, hope of a warrior" - Beautiful! And then: "On your face, pearls of attraction In your words, drowning poems But in your paradise, a twisted kingdom" - simply brilliant! 5th The arrangement which is highly orignial starts of with an adnan-sami-calibre piano, then kicks off in rock style, then elevates with acoustics, progresses to a wonderful guitar solo and finally concludes without beats and only guitars- all moves hitting the bull's eye! 6th The production by Sarmad Ghafoor (Rungg) is again simply brilliant and a big + in the song. For me Sarmad is not even an inch behind Mekaal as a producer. You will hear a lot of songs which sound great owing to his production rather than the songwriting itself e.g Noorea - Visaal Anyways if you guys dont believe me, check out
